Extra Large and Oversized?

2010.07.28

Every morning, I read my twitter feed faithfully, and this morning, I read something that really sent my plus-sized self into a tizzy.  Someone, who shall remain nameless, was tweeting about the woman who was kicked off of her Southwest Airlines standby seat because of the “oversized” and “extra-large” teenage girl who needed two seats.  Now, I don’t know about you, but with the recent developments that Chanel, YSL, and McQueen will start carrying sizes 10-20 in Saks, I thought we were beyond that kind of vocabulary being used for HUMANS.  I tweeted back at this person and suggested that those two adjectives were offensive, that she use the words, “plus-size” and not only did she LOL at me, she re-tweeted it.  I feel that those are two words that would be used to describe luggage and not a person.

I have been plus-sized for mostly my entire life and no one deserves to be spoken about/to like that.  I refuse to let these words be spoken about another plus size female especially when she is not around to defend herself.  We are trying to create Fashion EQUALITY!  If we start using words like “extra-large and oversized” we are falling back into the pit of muumuu’s and tents and walking away, ne, running from the accomplishments the designers. bloggers and models have had!

Full Figure Fashion week was a greater success this year than last.  The number of designers in the industry is GROWING!

The Plus Size Industry is being recognized by Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Donna Karen, McQueen, and Dolce & Gabbana.  I don’t know about you, but this is a day that a plus size girl like me has only dreamt of!  I never ever thought I would see it, but it is coming.  We are breaking barriers.  We have to stand together.  We CANNOT let anyone take those accomplishments and successes away from us!

XO,

Fanny
